I’m Still Expecting Zombies…

Last night was pretty apocalyptic, at near dead on 7pm, just as I was wrapping up at work when everything was plunged into darkness with the all to familiar sound of computer fans and disks spinning down for a few seconds before it all came back into life - meaning the loss of the email I was composing, and a fair amount of time bringing my system back up, checking the disk for errors and so on.
After speaking to my Brother and discovering that the power didn’t come back up at home, I left work, rang a couple of friends to check they were okay, and enjoyed the scene of the streets around my house plunged into total darkness, the odd one with candles flickering away inside.
The first thing I though to do was to get out my camera, and take some pictures using long exposures, but after the first couple of test shorts I took using the basic settings didn’t work, I made a quick phone call to my Sister to find out how to set up the manual settings to take the right kind of pictures. Which worked great, though suffered from lacking a tripod so I just settled the camera on a chair.
We got a couple of good pictures outside of my Brother, cricket bat in hand, but given it was freezing cold, and there were a couple of groups of Chavs roaming the streets, we figured standing around with hundreds of pounds of camera equipment wasn’t t the best plan. So we were left with only one option at that point: Retreat to a pub with power. As it happens it was quiz night, so we summoned a couple more friends to join in. (But still did rubbish)
By the time we got home the power was back, and that would seem to be it. However, to round the night off, at 1am in the morning we were hit by the biggest earth quake to hit the UK for 25 years. Now, given the night we’d already had, this was really not how I had imagined my night going. So I did the only thing you can do in such a situation, update Facebook via my mobile phone (And reply to my Sisters text) - read everyone else’s earthquake status updates (I counted about 10 people updating Facebook within 15 minutes of the quake) and went back to sleep.
